Keystone High School's Community

Pursuing Careers in the Arts or Athletics

A significant number of Keystone students are actively pursuing a career in the Arts or athletics while they are in high school. The schedule of a traditional high school makes it extremely difficult for these students to "do it all". The flexibility of Keystone appeals to these students because they have time to successfully pursue their academic work and extracurricular interests.

"I like it so much better than when I was in public school and trying to find time for training and performances," she said. "By working at my own pace, I complete my school work much more quickly than I did in the regular classroom. It's a lot more efficient, so I have time to train as much as I need to."

Lindsey has found that her enrollment in Keystone allows her to concentrate on her dance "without a lot of other side notes. It takes a lot of the stress out of my life to know that I don't have to worry about waking up early to go to school; I don't have to meet deadlines and if I'm really busy with dance I can take off a day or a week from my school work and catch up when I'm ready."

The rigors of training for competitive skiing events didn't allow for rapid progress with her schoolwork, so Sasha was grateful for Keystone's work-at-your-own-pace flexibility. "Even though it took me a little longer than if I had given up competitive skiing and continued with public high school, the route I took was definitely the right one for me."

"Keystone has enabled me to pursue my ballet training at Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre (PBT). I take classes in the morning and late afternoon, but with Keystone, I am in charge of my own school schedule. That is especially good during rehearsals and performances. With high school now complete, I have been invited to the trainee program at PBT. I hope to become a professional ballet dancer and continue to learn through online college courses."

"Because of Keystone National High School's academic programs, I have been able to fulfill my dream of attending ballet school in Europe while still achieving my high school diploma from an accredited American high school."

— Miranda B.

"Race season usually starts in the fall with regionals. … I still go to school five days a week. Usually I keep the schedule up, even during race season. I had gone to public school my whole life and we were looking for something more in-depth."
